Fredonia students assemble on campus to show support for the troops during the Vietnam War

Living through history as a college student creates a unique perspective--we're old enough to understand significance, yet young enough to feel invincible. Whether national events, cultural shifts, or campus movements, these moments shaped not only our worldview but also our sense of community at Fredonia. The way we experienced history together bonded us in ways that endure.

Fredonia Collegge Bid Band ---winners Mobile Jazz Festival

Francis "Bud", 1966 | Alumni

This takes us back to April of 1966 when the Fredonia College Big Band travelled to the First Annual Mobile Jazz Festival. They travelled 25 hours on a bus and had four hours to prepare for round one of the competitions. Appearing on the front page of the Mobile newspaper as the group that travelled the farthest, they made it to the finals the next day. Playing arrangements by Steve Willis and Don Menza among others they won the big band category. The late Jack Lis was named Best Alto Saxophonist. Down Beat magazine called them "a pleasantly relaxed musical organization distinguished by an excellent trombone section, good rhythm, and a fresh and lively soloist who was voted best altoist at the festival."

Jerry, | Current and Former Staff

Having the opportunity to work with the Buffalo Bills organization, coaches, players, and cheerleaders during their summer training camps held on the Fredonia campus in the early 80’s, in my role as housing coordinator for their staff and athletes, was a truly unique, rewarding, and FUN experience. I was also lucky enough to work alongside their legendary team trainer, Bud Carpenter, as he supported Coach Tom Prevet’s nationally ranked, NY State Champion men’s soccer team (I simultaneously had the great honor of serving as Tom’s Asst. Coach). Truly once-in-a-lifetime gigs that I’ll always recall fondly. Go Blue Devils and Go Bills!
